2015 Lone Oak Syrah

In most years, our Lone Oak Syrah – so named for the solitary oak tree that overlooks its vines at Evan’s Ranch – is produced predominantly from the Estrella River clone, California’s benchmark Syrah selection, which purportedly originated in the vineyards of France’s Hermitage region, the Northern Rhône Valley’s most famous syrah appellation.

Compared to our other Evan’s Ranch syrah, Las Brisas, which showcases the earthy, spicy, savory side of the syrah variety, Lone Oak is more voluptuously fruity. Blended with a small amount of the white viognier grape to further highlight its lovely fragrance, Lone Oak Syrah displays perfumed brambleberry, dark plum and red currant aromas with complementary notes of white pepper, black licorice, roasted earth and cocoa. This complex mélange of scents is reflected on the wonderfully rich, mouthfilling palate, which is lush with ripe blackberry, cassis and spice flavors, balanced by supple tannins and earthy/mineral nuances, all culminating in a deliciously long, savory finish. It merits 5-7 years’ cellaring.
